Is Debt Consolidation Right For You?
By Tymon Hytem
For millions of Americans, mounting credit card problems are creating unbearable burdens to carry through their daily lives. Most hard-working Americans have dreams of a financial future that is comfortable and allows them to enjoy their leisure time but still have a retirement plan in place for their golden years.  The stress created by growing credit card balances, that never seem to decline regardless of their strong and persistent efforts, makes these dreams seem completely “out of reach”.

Debt consolidation is a term that is often used interchangeably with credit counseling, or consumer credit counseling.  The essence of consolidation can be found in the term “consolidation”.  This refers to the gathering (or consolidating) of all unsecured credit card payments and merging these into a single monthly payment.  This is one of the basic components of a consolidation plan designed by a credit counseling agency.

Credit counseling companies are structured as non-profit organizations focused on assisting consumers with money management, budgeting, continuing education about finances, and addressing challenges related to credit card problems.  Debt consolidation programs not only convert your assorted monthly creditor payments into a single payment, but they also negotiate with your creditors to bring your interest rates down from their current levels. Oftentimes, if the creditor is a major national credit granter, a credit counseling agency may be able to negotiate a complete stop to your interest.  All consumers are handled individually, as are all creditor granters, so results may vary.

If a credit counseling agency decides a management plan is best suited to your situation, then they will develop a repayment program.  Debt repayment programs include unsecured debts such as credit cards, medical bills, department store cards, unsecured bank loans, finance company loans, and bills that have gone to collection agencies.  If you have other unsecured debts that you would like to be considered for inclusion into the management plan, they will discuss those with you during your consultation. A credit counselor will also advise on difficulties you may be having with secured debts such as your mortgage or vehicle loans although these will not be part of the repayment program.

Many people feel that consolidation is a credit card solution worth exploring and you will find that all initial consultations are free of charge.  This reduction method does ultimately require the full payment of 100% of the unsecured that has accumulated and potentially some continuing accrued monthly interest charges. There are other methods, specifically settlement services, which provide programs that actually

reduce or “settle” the unsecured owed for a lesser amount than is owed.  Those individuals that select a consolidation program via the non-profit credit counseling agency, do feel compelled or responsible to pay back all of their unsecured in full.  This is a matter of personal choice. Oftentimes, it is a matter of the severity of the financial situation too.  Both consolidation and settlement services have “pros and cons” to investigate thoroughly before deciding on a course of action.
