Your Debt Relief Strategy: Behavior Modification!By Tymon Hytem
Your relief strategy can start by taking baby steps, and there will be ample opportunities every day to ultimately “practice” your behavior modification as it relates to mounting credit card debt. When a new credit card application arrives in the mail, dispose of it immediately. People become victims of credit card by being enticed by the attractive bonuses, or reward points, or low introductory rates of interest. To embrace a true, long-term relief strategy, just remember one important thing. Credit cards do not build wealth! Credit card companies are not part of a multi-billion dollar empire without good reason. Avoid being entangled in their web of deception and trickery. Don’t allow their fabulous array of enticements to pull you into applying for more and more and more credit.
The next behavior modification that needs to be embraced is the practice of staying away from unnecessary credit card charging. While there may be some debate about the positive aspects of using credit cards versus paying with cash or debit cards, the truth of the matter is that it is much easier to accidentally overspend when you are pulling out the plastic! Even if you are someone who always pays your bills in a timely manner, it is very easy to make purchases you perhaps cannot comfortably afford once the monthly statement arrives. It has been found that the use of a credit card registers very little emotion. It does not require you to deduct the purchase from your check register, which serves as an immediate “reality check” for overspending. In fact, the use of credit cards as the primary method of making purchases actually results in overspending of 12% to 18%.
If you already find yourself facing a mountain of credit card and you can’t pay your balance in full each month when the creditors’ statements arrive, then it is time for the next phase of your relief strategy. You will need to get a handle on your total unsecured problem by listing all your credit cards and their balances. Your list should start with the smallest balances first and continue to the largest balance. It is also helpful to include the minimum monthly payment amounts. This may be a shocking revelation for you when you see the total credit card you have accumulated. It may not be too late to resolve the problem on your own. While always making at least your monthly minimum payments for all credit cards, begin attempting to pay off the smallest balances first, and as quickly as possible. The elimination of an entire credit card provides quick positive feedback and encourages you to stick with the strategy. Attack your list, one at a time, and monitor your progress. Give yourself praise for paying off any credit card completely!
Now if you find that months go by, and the best you can accomplish is to make only the minimum monthly payments on all your credit cards, it may be time to explore another relief strategy. You have probably already noticed that by paying only the minimum monthly amounts, your balances are not decreasing much, if at all.
The reality of the situation is that
a credit card settlement program may be a way for you to ultimately extricate yourself from your unsecured problem. A credit card settlement company actually “negotiates down” the amount you currently owe to a reduced amount that your creditor will accept. That is the reason the terms credit card settlement and credit card negotiation are frequently used interchangeably. The balance is “negotiated down” to a lesser amount as a lump sum offer that the creditor agrees to as a compromise.
There are hundreds of credit card settlement services available if you find yourself in this type of serious financial trouble. It is an aggressive relief strategy, not without consequences, but it may be the last step you need to explore to be successful.
